Newlyweds: The First Year

Recommended Posts

I hate having to watch episodes in bits and pieces but that's what I'm having to do  right now and just got to the scene where Adonis tells her about using prostitutes. Not only did he tell her that but he said, "All the times you thought I was cheating? I was...." There's no way in hell I'd be marrying anyone who told me either piece of information.

ETA: Only get to watch on my lunch breaks and I still have 30+ minutes to go on the first episode. UGH! Thankfully my nights off are in a couple of days so I'll get to get caught up.

I'm watching the second episode and O M G, you can see Erika's buttcrack in that dress!! Trashy much? I must have missed someone else pointing this out because there's no way all of you missed that lol

Wow. I knew Tara cut short her last marriage due to cheating on the guy after only 4months but dang, I didn't know it was so recent. She said she's now been a newlywed twice in two years!

Of course her parents are ticked off then. They're still in debt for the first wedding!

How 'bout Tara's OCD ??

Interesting.

I wonder if her panic attack and change of mind to go to Italy while driving to the airport was a reenactment.

I finally finished the second episode and I truly believe the

Adonis/Erica storyline and Tara/Rob honeymoon ordeal were completely faked for the cameras. I don't believe for a second that they just talked about the prostitute thing a few days before the wedding. I think it was fake drama for the show. She goes to a hotel for a couple of days and everything is all good? Riiiiiight.

And did you see her working that tacky dress? I swear I saw butt crack.

No, they definitely were not on their way to the airport. It all seemed poorly acted to me.

While I agree that she most definitely had pressure to marry a Persian man, her cavalier attitude toward that marriage, her jumping into bed with a dude she pretty much just met 4 months into the marriage, and therefore humilating her husband, and both of their families is inexcusable to me. She shows no remorse and acts so "cutesy" about it. I think she's disgusting.

Caviler is exactly the right word for how Tara is acting. I understand cultural pressure, but there was another human being involved in her marriage and she's acting like it's his fault they didn't work out because he was Persian? Because her family liked him? Was this enough of a reason to go and cheat on him after four months of marriage? This has to be a humiliating process for her ex. Now the whole world knows what she cheated on him with a gremlin. Again, if she was tiniest bit contrite, it would make her likable, but she's all like "TEE HEE can you believe I'm a newlywed for the second time in two years???!!!" So precious!

Adonis is morally reprehensible, but worse than that, he is a big teefus, mouth-breathing, walking STD. Nothing against STDs of course, but they were probably happier back in Brazil.

I felt terrible for Brandon in that hot slice of hell campground. The people of Walmart go camping, and it looked like they were representing in all their gawking glory. I think Brandon was genuinely fearful, but it did not appear that any hot gay men were harmed in the making of this episode.

Tara and Skipper, pass.

Rob and Ro, loved the new apartment. Did not appreciate the clean mountain, musty cave comparison. Need to fully investigate this cookie butter they spoke of.

I don't think so. I don't think either of them would be good actors and Rob looked extremely pissed off.

Watching the latest episode and Erica says, "I grew up in a middle class family and we didn't really travel abroad." Can someone explain to her that traveling to another state in your own country isn't traveling abroad? I grew up poorer than dirt and seem to have travelled across our beautiful country more than she did, though I have never been to Hawaii.

ETA: What is with face licking? Erica and Adonis did it this episode, another couple almost did on a previous episode and i've noticed it mentioned on other shows too. That's just gross to me.

Ok so Tara's mom was in an arraigned marriage from the age of 9 and left that man when she was an adult to be with Tara's father. So I'm sure the judgement on Tara from her parents isn't about her leaving her Persian husband for Rob, it's that they spent all that money on the wedding like I said previously.

My thoughts on the episode:

I have to agree with Rob, to the rest of NYC, Ro is just another pretty girl. It wasn't an insult, it's how companies will see her.

I like how the other Rob told Tara to go make her own money. If she doesn't want him having an opinion on how she spends it then she needs to go earn it. ThoughI have to say if she's working with him PT then she's earning something and he's just not paying her monetarily.

Love love love Brandon and Craig and them trying to help the sister get pregnant.

I can't stand Adonis and Erica, fake storyline or not. I'll continue to watch them just because it's part of the show but they wont get my full attention.

How does the older half of the gay couple keep that beard at just homeless length? Not an attractive look to me. Combined with the neck tattoos, he looks like a street person.

Hard to believe that he wants to look that way

Rob and Tara won't make the year, imo.

So interesting how perceptions can differ. I actually thought it was a very poorly acted scene and he didn't appear extremely pissed off to me. I thought he was acting very annoyed, but definitely acting. I don't believe anything about that scene.

Uh, Rob, how about a cruise honeymoon? I mean, money is plentiful, right?

I think it probably had more to do with time off than finances. If he is a brand new lawyer trying to work his way up it might look bad for him to take 2 weeks off, or he might not have the vacation time yet if he is a new hire. Their wedding was in FL so he had to take time off for that.

That whole conversation made my head spin.  If Tara is to be believed, she used to get paychecks from Rob, like any other employee, but at some point that stopped.  Now he is telling her that if she wants to spend money, she needs to make her own.  If she's still doing the same amount of work (and yes, I understand that this is an unknown variable), then she IS making her own money, jackass--you're just holding onto it.  If she's essentially turning over her "paycheck" to him now, what's to say that he wouldn't also insist on that if she got a job working separately from him?  He was talking out of both sides of his ass, basically.  Now trust me, I hate defending that twit, because frankly, I think that spending >$2K in an afternoon of shopping is obscene and unnecessary, but I can understand her confusion.

This is why I believe in the "your money, my money, our money" system.  Joint account (contribution commensurate with earnings) to take care of bills, care, and feeding, joint account for saving for large expenditures that benefit both (house, car, vacations), and the rest as discretionary spending to the one who earns it.  I have never understood the mindset of someone who could spend heaps and gobs of someone else's hard-earned money without a second thought.

Yes I apparently am most confused haha :-).

I had to fast forward through Erica and Adonis's scenes. Her accent and annunciation drives me 100 percent insane. Shes vapid hes a player who thinks he is the greatest thing since sliced bread and I STILL don't think they are a legit real couple. and they are boring as hell! I do not give two shits about their marital drama.

Everyone else can stay. You can tell Tara was not expecting to hear that she can go work and make her own money. He had her number!

And I Would have been 100% pissed about the honeymoon. In fact, if my DH did that I would have boarded the plane and left him. Not kidding.

True story, I was kind of hungover and very tired getting on the plane for my honeymoon. I took a dramamine ( never have taken it before) and IDK WTF happened but it did not react well, made me sicker and I wound up puking on the plane :-( great start to the honeymoon LOL. I did feel better after I puked.

Lawyer Rob and Ro bug me so much.

So you both already complain about your jobs and how much you work, but you won't be satisfied until you're out of your perfectly nice (nicer than most) apartment in Jersey City and become a "New York Power Couple" living in a penthouse in Manhattan. How do you think most of those "power couples" who don't come from family money afford their fancy NYC digs? By working LESS than you do now? Sure, that's realistic!

You can't stay in NYC and have it both ways, guys: either you suck it up and accept that the "brass ring" you're stretching toward can only be grasped with many more years of hard work in jobs you're not that jazzed about but allow you to live somewhat luxuriously, or one or both of you quits your job to follow your passion and you move someplace where you can afford to live on less. Rob not wanting Ro to quit her 9 to 5 indicates to me that he'd rather they both spend their lives scurrying on a treadmill. Let's see how long that lasts before resentment comes knocking.

Adonis/Erika and Rob/Tara are having issues because of parents. Weren't those issues there before they got married? Just feels like these 'problems' are producer ridden.

I thought Tara was making her own money with Rob, like they were working together as a team. Now he's telling her to make her own money. Guess she better start looking for a job since she's so high maintenance.

I can't stand Erika's voice. Kim Kardashian vocal fry. Like fingernails on a chalkboard. Ugh!

I felt bad for Craig's sister. She looked older than forty to me. Maybe she should be seeing a fertility specialists instead of doing it on their own. This was the case with someone in my family too. I wish them luck. I also like how supportive their parents are too.

The whole Rob/Tara conversation in the kitchen when they were dissecting the "tens of thousands" of dollars that was "wasted" by not going on the honeymoon -- WTF.  I wish I had written down the line, but Rob said something like "I'm not blaming you, I am just exercising my compassion and empathy muscles."  Ass. Such.an.ass.  The "go make your own money" conversation was covered really well here, but can anyone exercise their memory muscles and remind me exactly what Rob said? My DVR muscles have atrophied.

If Tara has such anxiety issues, why doesn't she have some meds to take before flying? That would be the logical course of action. I see a big red flag regarding her husband. She used to get a salary from him, because she works for him part time but now she doesn't? This seems like a big control issue on his part. I also think it is a huge warning sign that he has no relationship with his parents. And this is marriage number three! None of those things instill a lot of confidence.

She/they are full of shit.

People have always had anxiety or panic attacks, but one of the reasons it seems more prevalent recently is because it's far more acceptable to admit that this is a problem. There is far less judgment so people feel free to talk about their anxiety.

Anxiety that Tara does not really have (in my opinion, of course).

I didn't understand her spending mindlessly after wasting all that money on the trip that didn't happen. As for the bank accounts, like the other Rob wants to join them, that's how my household runs. Though in our case neither of us are mindless spenders and I'm the one who makes sure the bills actually get paid.

I think they've always existed it's just tv allows us to a) see it more often b) people to pretend more so we see it more often.

I've known plenty of people with bad and or toxic people for parents and since we don't know his parents or their story I have no problem with him not having a relationship with them. I don't have one with my bio dad and try not to have one with my mother (the two aren't married btw).

I still get the Rob couples mixed up. I think the Rob married to Anxious Tara (right?) was kind of a jerk at lunch. Disclaimer: yes, she spent WAY too much on the clothes. But he won't pay her for working for him, yet doesn't want her to spend money without consulting him???? Maybe I am misunderstanding. He should be paying her. The way he said"then get a job!" was very rude and demeaning to her. Maybe she thought he wanted her to keep working for him.

Have to admit I kept looking at Tara's enormous perky breasts in that tight sleeveless top (dress?) she had on. Quite a feat of engineering they are!

I like Brandon and Craig too. They seem kind and caring.

Why is that a warning sign?  What if his parents are toxic?  I know scores of folks who have zero contact with their parents because of abuse, etc.

Yeah, Adonis cutting off his dad didn't sit well with me, either. I understand laying down the law with his dad and telling him that the raunchy trips are over because it's disrespectful to his wife, and he wants to work on earning her trust again, but putting space between them is messed up. Especially since they're close. But this is what happens when you marry for appearances sake.

I thought young Rob was slightly insulting to Ro. She said her passion is fashion journalism, so I'm not sure how she wants to parlay her corporate experience to achieve her goal, or what her actual goal is. But to brush her off as another pretty face was off putting. He wants to be a music producer, right? How would she like it if she told him that he's no Timbaland or Mike Will Made It? I'm down with constructive criticism and telling her not to quit until she has something concrete lined up, but he came off as cold. I didn't blame her for being upset about it.

#1- if you're that terrified of planes, you probably shouldn't scheduled your first major flight as a trip to italy.  Maybe try a 2 hour flight instead.

#2 - Rob - maybe you should get familiar with trip insurance

Adonis is gross with his hookers and his "player" mentality, but I think that Erica was way out of line asking him to cut his relationship with his father. Boundaries need to be set into place, but you can't just go around and force someone to cut a parent out. That must've been heartbreaking for his dirty old dad to hear. I don't respect the way he treats women, but he's a father nonetheless. Also, Erica's voice. Good God. I swear to god my dog was cringing and looking at me to protect him while she was speaking. When she started with the baby talk, I threw up a little bit.

Tara is a dick. I think she suffers from over privilege and an inability to hear the words that are coming out of her mouth. ALL the Persians in BEVERLY HILLS were talking about your mom? You've got anxiety....and the only cure.....is more cowbell, er..... shopping? Bird, please. Fly away and take your wormy super millionaire husband with you. Did no one teach these two dingbats that it is tacky and gross to talk about your wealth? It should be sad and concerning to them that they need to have watches that cost as much as cars on their wrists in order to feel like they have any sort of value. Also that whole "This why girls shouldn't grill" bullshit.... Get THE FUCK out of here with that shit. If there is something that really fucking irritates me it's feigned helplessness. Because grilling is SO complex and God knows you can't flip over a hunk of meat over fire without a penis. Dumbass. And her little goblin husband loves it. Gross.

Ro and Rob? Zzzzzzz. Boring ass first world problems. Welcome to NYC, jerks. It ain't easy.

My heart broke for Brandon's sister when she found out she wasn't pregnant. I can relate to wanting a baby, and I'm sure she'll get her wish soon. Loved their family dynamic.

Yep, anxiety/panic attacks have always been around. We used to call them nervous breakdowns. Women in the 50s and 60s used to take "mother's little helpers", basically speed or benzo depending on type, to help them deal with life.

We have made some strides in mental health issues, have a long way to go, but people are more able to be accepted if they ask for or need help for anxiety or panic. As a sufferer, I don't like when people play at it however. The struggle is real and not something to pretend to have to get out of things.

I watched that scene in the car with Tara and Rob again. She was not having a panic attack. Also, the way she describes her anxiety in the more recent episode is extraordinarily unconvincing. I'm a psychologist, I've seen panic attacks, I've studied anxiety, I work with anxious clients on a daily basis. And why is everything blamed on her culture? It's basically her attempt to excuse her asshole-ness.

This woman has full of shit/I want to be on a reality show-itis.

My heart broke for Brandon's sister. I know what it's like to long for a baby (I had to resort to IVF to have my children).

I know the pain too well.

Yep, totally. I've had panic attacks and they don't look like that at all (they can actually be really terrifying). It was entirely fake.

That would explain Rob getting pissed like he did. At least to me he seemed pissed and annoyed.

I don t know what is worse! that bird blaming her Persian culture or her husband blaming her parents for her psychological problems.

How about taking responsibilities for her shitty choices and realizing that brain chemistry plays a part as well?

She might well be 27 after all. Too bad that she only has the awareness of a 12 years old.

She is clueless and he is an asshole, IMO.

An ex friend of mine who is gay married a straight chick and they tried the old basting/syringe method to get her knocked up. It didn't work and neither did the marriage (yea, who saw that one coming).

I think the gay couple is my favorite of this new batch, which isn't saying much. They seem really mismatched to me. Of the straight couples I think the least offensive one is Ro and Rob, which again, isn't saying much.

I think most people know that the first year of marriage is hard without having to cast obvious fame/attention whores to prove the point which is my problem with most of the cast for this season.

I can't even begin to have words for Adonis and Erika that hasn't been repeated ad nauseum up thread. Hopefully Arizona is one of those states that make you have a blood test before marriage because otherwise, home girl is just plain stupid.
