    S07.E08: Maja's Story

One day, she hopes to work as an executive in an office. *dies laughing*

The bonus scene was them in the apartment after her screaming fit at the doctor's office. She said she was sorry about losing it but how she was wishing Christian was more supportive and that he promised to love her and help her and he doesn't. Well, people fall out of love, and if you behave like she does, it's to be expected! Also she was complaining he was giving her the silent treatment - but it sure didn't sound like that! He didn't say much but he did speak to her! I guess this scene was meant to portray her as more sympathetic - well, it didn't work. She is a notch less bitchy in this version, but this is not much of an improvement anyway. They are both unpleasant individuals.

It is dated something like 2012 or 2013 if you actually look at it, so of course it is from when she has not gained as much yet, not because she lost anything. I fell asleep before the end of the show, so I will have to finish watching today.

The bonus scene is them packing to move to Houston. She is both excited and terrified because she has never left her family before. But hasn't she lived on the cruise ship? Her Aunt who helped raise her came over to help her pack. The aunt is far from slim too, but not nearly as bad as Maja. Maja is complaining that Christian is looking at his phone and detached and she is starting to doubt whether he is committed to moving to Houston and to her. They did not have apartment arranged when packing, just applications out. Now that is stressful, I get that. I wouldn't have agreed to something like that... Even as a new graduate with limited cash I still flew out to NJ to look at apartments for a couple days and chose a place and had everything in place before I moved halfway across the country.

Her least favorite vegetable is beets. Maybe she doesn't know how to cook them properly? I love beets! Her favorite food on her new healthy diet is grilled shrimp. She hopes to visit Serbia some day. Well, if she could barely handle the 4 hour flight to Houston, how is she going to deal with the transatlantic flight? She is not likely to lose any weight doing it her own way.

Christian asked a different question during the first appointment vs. original airing - he asked whether going onto the diet would be a shock to her system. Dr. Now responded with it is taking the load off the system that is pushed to the limit now. I wonder if they read the comments that he came across as douchy in the original showing until the abuse he was subjected to became apparent and adjusted this episode to portray him as more sympathetic from the beginning? Probably not but maybe they did have that presentation in mind when editing the cuts...

The SUV they got has NY license plates! I will know our orange anywhere. The box said they got a nice hotel and hoped to do some sight-seeing along with the appointment. An earlier one said Maja was looking forward to going to Houston because she has never visited Texas before. Another box said she was happy to meet Dr. Now and impressed with his "extensive medical knowledge" and liked his sense of humor. That sure didn't last... Not that I saw.

I just don't get why she keeps repeating her complaints over and over and over and over - is she trying to work herself up or does she think a magic fairy will come and solve her issues if she complains enough? The falling scene was shown much better in this version. She had something like a panic attack and Christian actually came up to her and tried to help her but there is no way for a regular man to support her weight! She didn't really fall as much as she slid onto the floor of the parking garage.

Out of fast food options, favorite foods are cheeseburgers and chicken nuggets. Waaah, waah, spending time with Mom who was tired from working two jobs was not as much fun as hanging out with her grandparents and aunt. Tragic, I know. The reason her father stopped being part of her life is "he was sick of driving 3 hours to pick me up for the weekend". She is a huge movie fan. It's very funny and snarkable to hear her and Christian talk about their relationship and each other in the beginning of the show now that I know how it all ends! And I keep noticing subtle things like Christian sitting as far as possible from her on the couch even in the first scenes. They said Maja lived on a cruise ship for 9 months. That was probably during the period of time when she was working (mainly in food service) but I kept imagining her sitting in the 24-hour buffet for 9 months straight, eating non-stop!

There was another bonus scene with them going out to a nice restaurant. And how he has confidence now to be out and about and not worry about people looking at him. During that date he was saying how he would like to get a job and get a house, and go places and she said she would like to go to the zoo. They looked more genuine and warm in the bonus scene than in others. And they were talking about visiting Italy eventually. And she mentioned she would like to get a ring "sooner rather than later". And he said it is something he has on his mind. And now that he has a new life he never wants to go back to the way he was, "sitting in the house and rotting away".

His favorite food was his mom's sweet potato casserole. On the diet, his favorite food became cauliflower tots (I am not sure what it is, but it sounds like a way to make cauliflower into something far less healthy than it is naturally!) He was star-struck when he met Dr. Now, and what Brandon appreciates most about him is his selflessness. When he got approved for weight loss surgery, he was scared at first because he was afraid of surgery. They did NOT show the whole scene with Tayler not wanting to move to Houston. They just had Brandon recap it in a voiceover. The call-out box said for him, the biggest difference between Columbus and Houston is the weather. (What did he expect if he didn't go anywhere much in either city?) He said he liked the apartment in Houston, that it was well-maintained. The bonus scene was from when he was in the hospital for his cellulitis. He said it was nerve-wracking because of the IV and the constant bloodwork and he was really ready to go home. Really did not add any value in my book. They also had a callout box saying that his hidden talent is being able to pick up languages quickly. Well, I will believe it when I hear him speak another language! I have heard that musicians are often good at imitating accents/vocalizing phrases in another language/getting pronunciation right, but it is not the same as learning another language to speak it properly... so I am not convinced yet.

His Supersized version is coming up at 8pm, I wasn't going to watch originally, but I probably will keep it on to try and catch the extra scene.

Thou canst harness the unholy power of grapes and use it for good! Though grapes are so last week, this week the Snack of Doom was oranges.
  14. $1500 compensation? Seriously? I guess they do not do much actual filming, maybe one day a month except when around surgery time? I guess if we add in the cost of participating in the weight loss program and surgery, it becomes a handsome sum, but I am still surprised by the low cash value. Especially given the poundticipants' liberal spending on food!

    S06.E08: Robert's Story

When the body has been under extreme stress for a long time, like his has been, anything could precipitate an event. It could have been surgery - it could have happened without the surgery just as well. We will never know. As far as opioids go... lots and lots of factors go into why some people become addicted vs. not, and to me it's just as sad when people fear prescribing or taking opioids for legitimate purpose as when they abuse it (I used to be certified pain management pharmacist though I haven't worked in that area for a while). Generally, though, when there is actual severe pain, there is less of a likelihood of getting a high because of how opioid receptors are activated in the body. Because our bodies naturally produces substances similar to opioids, depending on what goes on, when we put external opioids into the body, they do not affect everyone the same and do not affect any given person the same at different time points. The best thing is to take them only when you need it and not more and dispose of them appropriately.
