  1. Me too! Healthy food can be delicious and varied! Some of them do seem to know that, but for vast majority their food is bland and boring when they are eating junk and then it is just as bland and boring when they restrict calories. It's like it never occurred to these people that food could be a joy in terms of quality, not quantity!

    S06.E21: Sean & Dottie's 2018.07.25

I think Sean's ship has sailed and he is extremely unlikely to develop into a productive self-sufficient human being, no matter what anyone tries to do to help him. I don't know if anyone has ever studied "window of acquisition" for general life skills, but I personally think he is an irreversibly broken man. The only way he could change and grow is if he WANTED to do it and applied all effort towards it - but the part of him that could develop that desire is absent or suppressed to the point of non-viability. His mother was a horrible woman to do this to her child.

    S07.E07: Brandon's Story

I am catching up with the live chat thread now, and I wanted to chime in on the non-fasting blood draw issue. I think Dr. Now really wanted to get the blood draw on him there and now because he knew that once Brandon left the facility, he absolutely would not come back for a blood draw. When someone is over 600 lbs and haven't had bloodwork done for many years, you catch them when you can. Besides, IIRC the only thing you cannot get a good reading on when doing non-fasting draw is triglycerides, but some of the newest guidelines actually recommend non-fasting triglycerides, that is a better predictor of heart disease risk (a shoutout for Heart Disease Awareness Month! If you aren't familiar with all the different possible symptoms of heart attack, please go check that out, it may save a life). I did not like how the phlebotomist (don't know whether she is actually a nurse) handled the draw. OK, it's silly for a 33 year old man to be afraid of needles, but it is equally silly for a healthcare professional to ignore that fear and end up with a potential issue on your hands. I agree with those who said TLC tried to amp the drama for this episode... First they show it as if Tayler just doesn't want to move period, then in the next month they show she didn't want to move without having an apartment and a job lined up. Heck, I won't move somewhere unless I know where I will live and how I am going to get money there! That's actually a much more adult behavior than whining "but I want to go noooow". I think originally they had two months to make a move - that may not be enough time in post-hurricane Houston to find an apartment and a job takes time. I don't think they said what Tayler does, but I don't think there are many jobs in this day and age where you can just walk in an be hired right away. And any positions that are that easy to get are probably horrible work environments or they would not go unfilled... It was a little weird to see Tayler's family react so strongly to the move. If her Mom and Grandma are that worried about her possibly wasting her time with a man not worthy of her - why were they OK with her living with him in Ohio? If they are just sad she won't be nearby - this is not 14th century, there is Skype, and FaceTime and everything else to stay in touch every day or even multiple times a day. She probably cried because now she became the "Responsible adult" by default and that responsibility can be scary when you first have to deal with it, but she handled it pretty well in the end.

    S07.E07: Brandon's Story

I was actually surprised that about half the eggs were left on the tray when the table was cleared. I thought they would eat all of them... and I don't think it was *that* many. maybe 20 halves though let's take 30. I can eat 3 eggs - so that would make it 6 pieces of deviled egg - but then it IS my entire dinner, other than a slice or two of toast and some fruit... but 15 pieces eaten by 3 people is not that outlandish (though it's way too much for an appetizer). An egg is only about 100 calories, if I remember correctly, though they probably add a ton of mayo... I thought it was chicken they were frying, but when it was was actually served, it did not look like chicken. Maybe it was indeed pork chops - but until I had read your post, it has not occurred to me that bone-in (I am pretty sure I saw bones in them!) pork chops could be deep-fried. I have only ever eaten fried boneless pork chops that have been pounded out to at most a quarter inch thickness.

Today I went for a walk - it was a beautiful sunny day - during lunch so I ended up eating while listening to a webinar. While it was supposed to be about healthcare disruption, they spent most of it talking about the history of how we came to eat some much sugar and how diabetes is so prevalent now. Just as they were talking about an average American consuming 2,5 times the maximum FDA recommended daily amount of sugar (or 5 times the max recommended by WHO), I was eating a delicious scone. With clotted cream and strawberry jam! Though unlike Drew, I am not 700 pounds. They did make me think about how much sugar I actually eat, saying how hard it is to avoid now (the speaker has been trying to challenge himself to eat no more than 25 grams a day and said it was time-consuming and expensive). I wonder how much sugar these guys eat, especially given that they are in Georgia, where everything seems to contain sugar!

    S07.E07: Brandon's Story

I missed the Live Chat because I was 40 minutes late getting to the episode and it took me until the last 2 minutes to catch up. The way they showed him in the previews, I thought he would be whining and snarkable, but he is another decent guy who did well, even if he did have some emotional issues and setbacks. He seems determined to succeed, and I hope he does. I am glad his girlfriend stuck it out with him. And started on the diet too - she was starting to waddle too... maybe they can both get in shape together? I kept hoping he would get back in touch with his father. It doesn't sound like HIS relationship with his father was toxic, Brandon and his Mom have been two separate persons for over three decades and neither seems to have fully grasped the fact. The food Mom cooked looked good... and they actually ate at a table together off nice plates. I am impressed! Both homes looked really nice and neat too... PS I haven't seen that many episodes, but I am seeing a trend where husbands/boyfriends of obese female poundticipants tend to be normal weight, plus or minus, while wives/girlfriends of obese male poundticipants tend to be also at least overweight but more often obese. Makes me wonder...

If I remember correctly, he was very supportive at first but when she actually progressed on her weight loss, they started fighting all the time and he became kind of a jerk. Maybe because she really wanted to have a baby and he didn't?

I will hope that "they are struggling" means "struggling and overcoming" and not "struggling and succumbing"!

Don't rely on my recall because I don't remember exactly about the profession of that gal. That's been a year after all. Russian dish, actually. There are a lot of different herring preparations popular all over the North Sea and Baltic Sea. I am not a big fan of herring, but when my travels take me somewhere, I do like to try local foods and I tried at least half-dozen kinds of preserved herring. Smoked is way better than pickled (or fried).

Looks like this entire episode is a recap of the last season. Well, they do have 9 minutes left if they want to insert something else besides the reveals.

A professional can be also a friend. I answer a ton of health-related questions for free for family, friends, neighbors and co-workers. If I can help, why wouldn't I?

Speaking of weird salads... there is a layered salad that is our family tradition for the winter holidays. It's basically smoked herring buried under layers of beets, carrots, potatoes onions and covered with mayo at the top. One of my friends, when invited over, kept insisting it was a cake and I could not convince it was, in fact, a salad. 🙂 It's vegetables! And a herring cake sounds way weirder than a herring salad anyway!
