    Season 16 Discussion

Maelyn was definitely a night one standout for sure. Although Fields of Gold being an all-time favorite song may have factored into that judgement at least a little. Lisa Ramey narrowly missed out on being an extremely rare, two season/no-chair turn. I can only thing of one (a furniture mover guy from Minnesota in two of the earliest seasons), but I'm sure there has to be at least a couple others. Other than that, I sort of liked Trey, and LiLi...and maybe Karen, although I think I need to hear a little more from her to make a more definitive decision...

    SYTYCD in the Media

I think we are closing in on the nine lives (of a cat), territory for SYTYCD. It's apparently unkillable lol. Here's hoping we get a format that leans more classic than experimental for this go round...

Well, a Chris win would've of floored me. His would've been the one winning outcome I couldn't of easily explained. Chevel, I felt in the last couple weeks seemed to elevate to the favorite spot despite her recurring issues w/ technique lol. I thought it was going to be Chevel, Kirk, Kennedy, Chris in that order.

    America's Got These Past Contestants

Anybody else watch Darci's Christmas special? We sort of watched it passively in that it came on after the Voice and we didn't bother changing the channel. But it was actually pretty good, with very little filler. Only thing I thought was a missed opportunity was not having her sing with Pentatonix and possibly one of her puppets. Pentatonix sounded excellent btw on Where Are You Christmas? One thing that struck me is for Darci (and her team), what exactly do you do with a popular 14 year old female ventriloquist? They definitely mixed up and had her singing with her puppets, singing without her puppets (two solos and a duet with Kristen Chenowith), and not necessarily acting...but getting her feet wet in a comedic hosting type role. There's only two (Jeff Dunham and Terry Fator) in the ventriloquist lane really (and she's so young they can't be booking her on a seedy Casino tour yet lol), so I think they are really throwing everything at the wall to see what makes the most sense as she navigates whatever comes next in her career. Food for thought.

OMG, That was the greatest "business decision" in the history of the Voice. Adam looked up and DeAndre and just said "nope, not going to happen for you". It's absolutely hilarious when get this exact scenario (two of one coach's artists against each other) where the unwritten rules of the Voice about not picking favorites has to go out the window. I mean, sure he could tactfully said vote for both of my artists....but what's the fun in that?

    Season 15 Discussion

The more I listen to Kirk, the more I think he has a limited number of tempos that he can handle. Something about his affectations and a more rapid fire delivery of words causes it to start sounding strangled on the way out of his windpipe. Dave and Reagan have the same issue, they only sound reasonably good singing at full blast. So therefore, the choruses tend to sound okay to pretty strong while they both sound absolutely lost trying to sing verses. Maybe bandzilla has something to do with that part of the time...but a lot of that is on them. So, Kennedy went first and she did a very non-Voice style of song with a full-on dance breakdown. I thought she sounded very one-note, monotone...but that was probably just the song itself. I think we could get a sense of if the votes are with her tonight, as it wouldn't shock me if she's one of the three singing for the twitter save. I'd say DeAndre is probably there for sure (singing in the twitter save)...but for me, he's the one non-country singer who I could remotely see myself hearing on the radio even if he is maybe 10% too derivative of Bruno Mars. Do they let the coach (or the artist) know that they were just messing with them after they call them safe last before the twitter sing-off? To me, Sarah Grace swung for the fences (Gospel hymn...check. Instrumental solo...check, arrangement that rips off House of the Rising Sun....check) because Kelly and her really believed she was 9th out of 11 last week (or whatever it would've been). I think the combination of all things probably buys her another week. Chris & MaKenzie keep doing what they do...but at some point (IMO) they have to start hitting the twitter save. Either that or they are just automatic in the cut down from 8 to 4. Kimberli Joye, didn't listen...surprisingly not the first person to do Oceans on the Voice. DeAnna Johnson did it as well back in the day. Chevel is getting closer and closer to one of those "trick" Western contestants with the yodel that American Idol always usually finds. I'm half-expecting I Wanna Be a Cowboy Sweetheart or Patsy Cline's Walking after Midnight next week.

    S01.E08: The Semi-Finals

It's only taken me until the semifinals, to come to the obvious conclusion that Rylee Arnold is a little force of nature. Miles is amazing (and has picked up more proper technique than anyone on this show this side of Skye)...but my eyes are constantly drawn to Rylee. I don't know what projects it would involve, but we've not seen the last of her on TV (pre-her DWTS adult debut in Season 43)...I would bet money on that.

    Season 15 Discussion

What I thought would be the most logical outcome (as it related to the elimination) actually happened. PurgatoryMom seems to think Kirk Jay is siphoning off votes that might otherwise go to DeAndre....and I can't decide if I agree with that take or not. He definitely wasn't on my radar as the other person in the bottom two (I thought his Jodeci song last night was quite good). But it's never wise to assume any of Blake's team will hit the twitter save until about Top 9 week, Kelly's tweens and Adam's Reagan seem pretty bulletproof so far. That's why I thought maybe MaKenzie....but her popularity continues to surprise me a little bit. KB is very hit or miss on her live performances methinks...

    Season 15 Discussion

Some interesting song choices to say the least. I thought on the whole, the "fan" choices really helped Blake's team the most. It was really nice to see Dave (of all people!) really swing for the fences with something way out of the box or his lane. Chris got to do something that was a little different too, and while I know Sam Hunt is a polarizing figure inside country music...I think that song was much needed for Kirk to do something that wasn't a 90's or early 00's country ballad. He did a good, but not great job with it and now he can go back to his wheelhouse next week. Yeah, Reagan needed to watch the Complicated music video a few more times. She had most of the vocals down, but only about 15% of Avril's energy/teen girl swag that made that song a breakout hit. It was definitely a missed opportunity. Chevel drew a difficult song as well, I think. And clearly slower songs make it more obvious when she is off-key and off with her breathing technique or lack thereof. I think Butterflies or Follow Your Arrow would've been better Kacey Musgraves songs for her. Sarah had it rough too with F+TM. It's hard for anybody this side of Pentatonix to recreate the vocal energy/electricity she has in her voice on that song. I'd be worried for Lynnea this week. I think she definitely took a couple steps back...and mostly I just can't think of any other obvious choices to go home. If she's one of the bottom two, I'll be very interested to see who the other person is. Maybe MaKenzie? I don't have much confidence in that pick, that's for sure.

    Season 15 Discussion

I have to say after watching most of the performances on my computer, how impressed I was with Lynnea. She still has a huge uphill to climb, but if judging on last night alone she'd be a solid 5th or 6th at least. Anybody else a little squicky that Chevel sang a song where the punch line was "Ain't going to have your baby"? Just me then, okay. I thought Kirk Jay was not in tune, a lot. The high parts of that Lonestar song were just too high for him (or too high once you factored in nerves). Definitely stock down, but I'm not giving up on him yet. Reagan has this weird thing where certain times in almost every song, the whole thing feels too "big" for her voice or her presence on stage. But then she'll right the ship and start sounding and looking like one of the more marketable contestants this season has (at age 14....probably 15 by the time any kind of EP would be released). Tyke was terrible, like everybody expected. He should just sing nothing Jason Mraz song's and be done with it lol. Seemed a bit early for DeAndre to hit us with the Contemporary Christian or Gospel song...

    Season 15 Discussion

Cause I'm bored (I'm currently substitute teaching an Art class), Here's my power rankings: 13.) Lynnea Moorer-I don't know how you rank her anything other than last. Maybe she gets some sympathy votes...but that's about it. 12.) SandyRedd-guess what, the Voice voting public doesn't take kindly to singers who look they are possessed on stage. Sorry. 11.) Tyke James-Maybe there's an interesting Jack Johnson-esque voice in there somewhere. Beware of Tyke and the twitter save though, he fits the demographic to last a couple weeks longer than you would think he would. 10.) Chris Kroeze-Mildly surprised he got the votes on Team Blake, I just feel like he is going to get lost in the shuffle unless he just crushes a song choice/performance combo. 9.) Kymberli Joye- See SandyRedd; although she has shown (pre-last week) the ability to dial it back some, which gives her more of a chance to catch on in my mind. 8.). Dave Fenley-IMO, his performances have gotten less and less pleasant to listen too. He needs a turn around tonight. Maybe something big and anthemic and on country radio right now (not by Stapleton though, because it gets to be too derivative).. 7.) MaKenzie Thomas-Definitely an underdog, how does she standout in this sea of voices and adorable teenage girls? 6.) Chevel Shepherd-Raw talent, probably the farthest to go to being a polished artist of the four teen girls. 5.) DeAndre Nico-Solid all around, touching backstory....there's no real reason for him not to make my hypothetical finale other than I like my next 4 just a little bit better than him. 4.) Reagan Strange-This year's Aliyah Moulden. I think she's going to keep peaking at the right time... 3.) Kennedy Holmes-Wunderkind. It's just a matter of whether the voting public is as invested in voting for her vs. Chevel/Sarah/Reagan/(even Lynnea for a week or two)... 2.) Kirk Jay-Blake has had recent success with African American country singers (getting Spensha to the finale last season). He might have the most distinct voice of the 13 left. You never forget what Kirk sang by the end of the night (ymmv, of course). 1.) Sarah Grace-It just feels like Kelly is going to go back to back with young female ingenues. Although I hope they mix in some modern songs and not just make Sarah Grace sound like she's trapped inside an old time-y jukebox.

    Season 15 Discussion

Surprise, surprise, SandyRedd and Kymberli Joye had to be saved by their respective coaches. I think Blake had his disaster scenario where he had to choose between Dave and Michael Lee. I think he definitely wanted both in his 3, and was hoping at least one was voted in by America. But, Alas. Adam's was the only team that felt like it went "chalk". To me, DeAndre and Reagan are by far and way the standouts on his team. Which freed him up a spot to take his passion project of Tyke along for at least one more week. RADHA and Steve had no shot at his save, I thought maybe Kameron might've had an outside shot to carry on the tradition of trying to beat Blake with a country singer but it didn't happen. I feel like Abby was the odd one out on Team Kelly (Keith and Zaxai never really felt like they'd fit into her save plans). I think if Kymberli had got the votes over Chevel....Kelly might've saved Abby over Chevel. But once Chevel and Sarah Grace got the votes, saving Abby would've been overkill. Wow the two people off of the Comeback Stage were terrible. I wish voting for none-of-the-above was an option...

The Sonic Overload from 24 performances crushed into two hours is real lol. Dots And Stripes, I think you are spot on, although I'm having a difficult time "sussing" out who is actually popular (not necessarily from the show's perspective, I think the singing order on each team gives a lot of clues as to who TPTB would like to advance from each team)... 1.) Who I would like to see advance from each team: -Blake (Kirk Jay, Michael "Rockabilly Rick Astley" Lee, & he saves Chris Kroeze) -Kelly (Abby, Sarah Grace, & she saves Chevel) -Adam (Reagan, RAHDA & he save's Kameron) -JHud (Kennedy, Franc, & she save's MaKenzie) *This has 0.01% chance of happening* 2.) What I think will probably happen instead: -Blake (Michael Lee, Funsho & he save's Dave Fenley) -Kelly (Kymberli Joye, Sarah Grace, & she save's Abby) -Adam (DeAndre, Reagan & he save's Tyke) -JHud (Kennedy, SandyRedd & she save's Patrique)

Dammit, my prediction about Colton came true. Sigh. My initial, initial takeaway from tonight was that Michael Lee's "Whipping Post"<<<<<Bo Bice's "Whipping Post" (from AI Season 4). I'm also annoyed that Adam and JHud conspired to knockout Delaney. She wasn't at her very very best, but she still brings way more originality and uniqueness to the table than Steve & Colton combined. I also could not understand more than 5 words Chevel sang that weren't in the chorus of Travelin Soldier. Yes she has an intriguing tone but if it's mostly incoherent word soup it's not really going to help all that much moving forward. For those keeping track, our Top 24 is: Team Adam (DeAndre Nico, Kameron Marlowe (STEAL), RADHA, Reagan Strange, Steve Memmolo (r'lly?), & Tyke James) Team Blake (Chris Kroeze, Dave Fenley, Funsho, Kirk Jay, Michael Lee, & Natassia 'By the Power of Greyskull' GreyCloud (STEAL)) Team JHud (Colton Smith (STEAL BACK), Franc West, Kennedy Holmes, MaKenzie Thomas, Patrique Fortson, & SandyRedd) Team Kelly (Abby Cates, Chevel Sheppard, Keith Paluso (STEAL), Kymberli Joye, Sarah Grace, & Zaxai)

    Season 15 Discussion

Putting on my Nostradamus hat before the end of the KOs in tonight's episode. Sarah Grace will defeat Chevel on Team Kelly. Because Chevel needs to be saved by Kelly...we will see this KO. Kennedy will annihilate Anthony on team JHud. This feels like a KO that would often get the dreaded montage treatment. However, with only 6 KOs left, I think everyone gets theirs shown in it's entirety tonight. Michael Lee will knock off Chris Kroeze in the KO that's been "leaked" early to Ytube. Chris will then get Blake's save. So JHud's steal has to come from these last three battles. In my mind, it would play out where Kirk Jay wins over Colton Smith in Blake's 2nd KO, and Jake Wells over Delaney Silvernell/DeAndre Nico over Steve Memmolo. To me, Steve has absolutely no shot and unless she really screws up (like Katrina Cain level bad)....the steal should be all Delaney. However, knowing how this show tends to go I'm afraid JHud is actually going to steal back Colton which would border on a travesty...
