Buddy’s daughter Sofia has really grown up, this show has been off the air for a while.

I wonder why we didn’t see Ralph at all the first half of the show? I thought he might have left the bakery.

If Momma just died at the end of June, they must have filmed this all pretty recently, but I don’t think we needed to see quite that much memorial.

Why would they have Mary talk to the German Ambassador? Why wouldn’t they have someone who is at least semi intelligent do it? The Brandenburg Gate cake came out great though.

The Buddha cake was gorgeous, the flowers looked real, & I loved the Oktoberfest cake.

my dvr didn't record the special. I think too many hands in my household were trying to get all of the games recorded. Oh well, a 2hr funeral isn't something I don't think was best. buddy is still reliving his father's death who passed in the 90s, as if Buddy Sr. just passed. so I figure every new upcoming episode will be the same for Momma Mary. therefore even though I missed the special all of the flashbacks will make up for it.

The whole 2 hours wasn't devoted to the memorial, there was a lot of regular show too. My DVR shows everything repeating on Monday, so if you want to see it, you can catch it then.

The first hour focused on flashbacks (happy times) of Mary, and of course the sad moments.  I thought it was a nice tribute to her.  It wasn't all about the funeral.  It's nice to see such a close-knit family.  It was touching to hear Buddy say that he will keep his vow of taking care of the family, but I hope that he doesn't stress himself out worrying about everybody else.   He seems like a truly good person - they all do.   Buddy said that he was more mentally prepared for his Mom's death since they knew that the prognosis for her wasn't good.   It's still heartbreaking, but he had time to prepare himself, unlike with the death of his Dad.   I'm sure their store feels very empty without Mary, but hopefully they feel her spirit there with them.

How sweet was it when they told the story about Mary's youth and how lucky she felt whenever her Dad would bring home the occasional box of doughnuts for the family.  It was a rare treat.  Then she married a baker and was beside herself realizing that she could have cake every single day of the year!  They said that they lived over the bakery at first, and she'd sneak down at night just to have some cake!

I loved the cake with all of the flowers (for the restaurant celebrating Mother's Day.)   I love a buttercream frosted cake with beautiful flowers.  I can do without the elaborate cakes.  Just give me a simple flowery cake and I'm happy!

I thought Buddy Sr passed from cancer -meaning even though the time was probably cut short, by now , you're have time to prepare. Even still many of the earlier season episodes, it seemed like buddy was still seeking/wishing/hoping for his dad's approval. There comes to a point when you just have to let go.

When does the vow end? Yes, I think Buddy is stressed out.  I guess that I why I am saying that he should keep doing what he is doing to please and take care of himself  and his immediate family, not his late parents. Taking care of his wife and 4 kids, yes, stress over that - any good husband and father should.

However the sibling-family is very grown and mature now . 2 of his sisters married men who do not work for the bakery correct? then Grace's hubby has a fireman's salary/pension, kids are grown almost college educated (oldest is in law school), so that really leaves Madeline/Mauro.

I took it more to mean that he's the patriarch of the family and he would see to it that the family is okay.   They all seem to be doing just fine in their respective lives, but I think Buddy feels that he has a personal obligation to make sure that the family continues on and thrives - a lot of that due to the success of the bakery.  It's a big responsibility!

I did like the Buddha cake!  The details on the German Unification celebration cake was nice too.  I wish I had the kind of talent to form little animals and such out of fondant!  I made some cupcakes for Halloween one time and thought I was a cake boss when I made some little tombstones out of Milano cookies and piped on some green grass!  That's the extent of my decorating ability!  ;)

Mary's husband is the only one who never worked at the bakery, I have no idea what he does though. Lisa's ex husband used to work at the bakery, but now he's in jail for sexually assaulting a disabled teenager. They of course never identified the victim except for saying she was 14 when it happened, but Grace & Joey's daughter Bartolina is disabled & was around that age at the time, so the scum could have assaulted his own niece.

I thought Lisa re-married recently - like in the last 3 yrs ?

Bartolina is doing better - attended Lesley University according to FB. the episode that it was mentioned she was in college is when Grace babysat a very large dog - like a German Shepard.

He died of lung cancer three months after being diagnosed.

When the sisters did the painting, Mary kept saying how cute she was & I remembered back during an episode of The Next Great Baker when the challenge was to make a cake that looked like the sisters, Mary hated her cake because she said she was a lot cuter than that. Mary really thinks of herself as cute.

How strange to see Momma Mary when last week they had her funeral. Why would they show the shows out of order like that?

I can see there are a lot of people watching this show LOL. Anyway, just a few thoughts about the most recent one:

They made a Brazilian version of “Next Great Baker”? Why Brazil? That’s so random.

The hockey cake came out great, it really looked like a bag.

I wonder how much of the Taj Mahal cake was actually edible?

LOL, third post by myself. I thought the crystal cake was awful, it wasn't even really cake, it was mostly rice krispie treats.

I've been watching.  I just don't have much to say, but I agree about the crystal cake.

I was surprised as well that Brazil had a version of Next Great Baker.  It's called Batalha dos Confeiteiros and it seems like it follows the original recipe.  And there's also a version called El desafío de Buddy: Latinoamérica or Next Great Baker: Latin America.

Can we talk about Frankie? He looked like the size of a whale in the Taj Mahal episode. Everyone else besides Buddy has lost weight on the show including Mauro who was also huge.

I missed this season except for the first/second episodes. I wanted some time to go by for fear Buddy would memorialize his mom's death like he does his father. Too many of the older episodes you would think Buddy Sr just passed and his mom didn't remarry. Now that she has passed, I guess I need him to take the time he needs w/o re-grieving & seeking parental approval on air. And it had gotten to the point they they (the valestro siblings) ignored momma 2nd husband - as if the man didn't exist and/or they just married. Did they at least make mention of the man this season? I fear they put the man on the 1st and quickest mode of transportation out of town.

I see this is the 3rd TLC show that I follow that show stuff out of order - Counting On will show the wedding, then several episodes of pre-wedding prep. The Little Couple opened up about moving to FL and then the last show I saw they were still in Houston.

Good to hear Mauro is doing well after his gastro surgery, Did sibling-Lisa also have the surgery? How did she look this past season? Grace & Joe  Faugno, who has always looked fit/in good health , should really emphasize some kind of fitness program to the others. I imagine its hard when you work around butter and sugar all day, but I think Frankie could be on the verge of serious health issues. I wonder if the bakery provides health ins.  It's really not "hot" for a middle age man, to look like he is about to give birth.

Here's a comic strip that sums up how I feel about the current design trend with cakes:  (I hope I'm allowed to post this.  If not, Mods please let me know!)
