S06.E05: Under The Influencers 2017.06.22

In the hopes of selling a unit in his new mega-tower, Fredrik calls on everyone he knows. Ryan goes toe-to-toe with his buyer's wingman. Steve quickly realizes that when you mix business with friendship, you may end up with neither in the end.

The fat Jew is so stupid I can't even.

This episode seemed extra fake or something to me. Why couldn't the one guy look at places by himself? Dumb.

Steve's friends apartment didn't seem that special to me. Meh lol.

I couldn't even watch the Fat Jew parts of the episode. I am finding myself having this show on in the background and not really giving it my full attention.

Steve's friend's apartment--I feel like he definitely put too much money into the apartment for the neighborhood. It also seemed so fake with the dogs left there and things looking a bit messy, when Steve had showings scheduled.

Fredrik's assistant, Jordan, is interesting to me.

I did like the Steve and Fredrik interaction. For some reason it made me laugh. It might be because I was well into my bottle of wine.

Ugh the Fat Jew. I have to admit I was easily amused by Ryan's TH's about his naked photo and the Fat Jew.

Steve arguing with his friend felt like one of the fakest things I've ever experienced on this show?  If 75 people had RSVP'd yes you'd think it would look more prepared, set up, maybe some apps and drinks out, somebody showing up early?  I wonder if any of it is real at all.

Not just you/your wine. I was drinking Minute Maid lite lemonade and it was funny to me too.

I hope we never have to see the Fat Jew again. Hairection & calling Ryan Bryan? So obnoxious. I really like the apartment that Chris (?) bought.

Steve's friend Sam was a dick about the open house, but his Frenchie was so cute! Steve petting him on the sofa was adorable. He must not be very motivated to sell, because Steve will have to find a buyer with very specific tastes. The broker going on about the feng shui of the freaking ceiling beams made my eyes roll out of my head. And I have officially put too much thought into a contrived storyline.

I couldn't get over that broker who bitched about the ceiling beams and feng shui.

Ridiculous.

I didn't understand how Ryan's buyer and The Fat Jew became friends.  I was half-listening to that segment.   As I mentioned last week, it looks like the formula for this show is to have 2 super successful brokers with everything (pretty much) going their way, and 1 who can't just catch a break.  At least the 3 guys all get along.  That is so much better than when the show's first season when Ryan and Fredrik were obnoxious to each other.   I like kinder, gentler side of this cut-throat business!

The ceiling beams and feng shui?  Pffftt.   Steve's WTF look was priceless!

This show has become such manufactured, fake BS, though. Practically every scene. The personality of the three guys is the only thing saving it at this point. It sure as heck isn't the real estate porn, If I see one more glass building with floor to ceiling windows and sterile furniture I'm going to scream.

According to their story the buyer direct messaged (or personally/private messaged) The Fat Jewish on Instagram.  Then they started hanging out and became friends.

By the way, for those curious, The Fat Jewish is mostly known for gaining a huge following by stealing content by normal people on Instagram who had way less followers, and not giving them credit.

Controversy[edit]

In 2015, Ostrovsky was accused of and admitted to posting screenshots of several other comedians' jokes on Instagram and Twitter with the credits cropped out.[32][33] Following the controversy, Ostrovsky retroactively edited his past posts to credit the authors of the jokes.[2][18] The controversy drew attention to the cancellation of Ostrovsky's Comedy Central pilot,[33] which a representative from the network said happened months prior.[33][34]

Thanks for the explanation, Ms Blue Jay!   I didn't catch what Ryan's buyer did for a living either.  IMO, that's a big stretch to up one's budget from $2-3 million to $4 million.  Of course in my own little world, each increment of $10,000 makes a difference in home buying!

I found The Fat Jewish guy funny for about 5 minutes.  I can understand Ryan's frustration with him.  It's sad though that Ryan's buyer felt like he had to get his opinion on everything.  Was he helping him to pay for it, or going to live with him?  If not, then his opinion was not needed, especially since it wasn't constructive criticism.  If you're going to take somebody to a listing appointment for advice, take an inspector or somebody who knows of the important details to be looking at, not the superficial ones.

Okay.  Last night's episode was so boring, annoying, whatever, that I actually switched to see what else was on a few times.  Just about about everything with Steve is so fake and annoying that his looks can't save it. I don't blame him, though.   And the Fat Jew with Ryan....not amusing and overdone. Not Ryan's fault.  I liked seeing Fredrik in the church.  Good for him.  I think that I'll give the show one more chance next week.  If it's more of the same, I'll be done.

Some shows just fall apart over time. I fear that is what happened here.

I'd like to know how much all those drivers make - it seems like Fredrik, Ryan and Steve all have personal drivers in Manhattan (not cheap!!!).

And, seriously, between Steve and his driver, Bradley Cooper (not THAT Bradley Cooper) - that is one car full of handsome!!

I bet Bravo provides them in order to keep on schedule without having to bother with mass transit, taxis, etc. Plus it gives TH info without another TH, and shows them being busy & multi-tasking without interrupting the agents working in their offices. And yes, the car full of handsome!

I'm sure Steve is a nice guy, but, I thought he was much more attractive when I first saw him.  To me, great looks only go so far.  I don't think his personality is coming through on the show.  Or, maybe, that's how he really is.

I agree SunnyBeBe, Steve is handsome but he doesn't seem to have much personality. Ryan is still my favorite because I like his snarky sense of humor. I wonder what the brothers' friend does that he can afford 4 million dollars. Also hated the fat Jew and his stupid remarks. I always say I could never be in this business because I could not stand potential clients who did nothing but complain. Most people look at stuff online and wouldn't even see a property unless they were interested. Of course, it is ramped up for TV but I also think some of these people are really unpleasant in real life. Happy I'm not rich so I don't have to be around people like this. There is a silver lining in being average.

I realize I'm not his target Twitter market, but "Fat Jew" (okay, can I just say I find that a little offensive?) is to me one of those people who aren't nearly as entertaining and witty as they think they are.  I found him completely insufferable.  And frankly, what's he doing helping one of his Twitter followers buy real estate anyway?  Oh yeah.  Cameras.  Show.

REf. The Fat Jew. Maybe, Andy's one of his investors or something.

Can anyone find the info for this show and 2017?  The latest info on Imdb is for 2016.  Odd.  I was wondering who the writers and producers are for this season. Anyone know?

You could sometimes be -happily- surprised :)

... Because yes, some insanely rich people like to be with "normal" and "real" people, like you and I. And' there's absolutely nothing sarcastic or whatever intended with the choice of the words "normal" and "real". Youre a likeable person ? You're liked. You're a jerk ? Get the outta here !

I had the luck of having lived "thousand lives" as we say in French (dunno if it exists in English), and one of them. ~20 y.o. was a kind of a jet-setter one during the week-ends, flying private, yachts in Monaco, Helicopter, etc... But I still was this young bank employee, working MO-FRI, 08.30-17.30, without any money, no "couture" clothes, no designer shoes, etc., but.... I've always been welcomed and accepted for what I was. Never been a gold digger -and never considered as one- never asked for anything, never have been felt "excluded" nor a "charity alibi", if that makes sense....

To summarize : good people are good people. Assholes are assholes. With money or not.

Someone mentioned the drivers--I think when you are as successful as Fredrik and Ryan, it is essential to have a driver on the payroll and be at your beck and call. I don't think Bravo has hired the drivers. Well, maybe for Steve? But, maybe not. He said he has been in the business for nine years and he seems really friendly with his driver.

I think Brad is Steve's assistant or someone in his office.  On this episode he mentioned Steve "helping him start selling".

I do not mind the contrived drama. I am easy that way, especially in the summer. I still find the show entertaining despite the contrived stories. I like Fredrik (I am the one person who likes Fredrik and Bethenny, so I will be watching that show), Ryan, and Steve, so I am in for the season.

Well that's why I said "According to their story".  A fellow poster was asking what was said during that segment because he or she missed it so I just provided the story that was told.  I have no idea what really happened of course.

I do not mind the "contrived drama" either; to be clear, we are in the 6th season and I am a huge fan of this show.  That particular fight between Steve and his friend really annoyed me though because I found it really insulting to my intelligence.

Well, the good thing about Steve is, if the apartment he and his buyers are looking at is ugly, we can just sit back and enjoy watching him show said property. ;)  That makes it a lot easier!  His seller did overdo it on the high-end finishes.  There's only so much you're going to get back out of a property even when it's remodeled.  Our previous house needed a new kitchen - which we simply couldn't afford. What we had was quality cabinets, just outdated.   After selling the house, we knew that we never would've gotten out money back out of it had we done the remodel, even though they say that's one of the more important things to remodel if you're going to do it.   Sometimes you just have to be patient and the right buyer will come along and appreciate a property for everything else it has to offer.

No discussion of Ryan's naked ass, eh? I'm either impressed or disappointed.

Did I hear Ryan say he owned that apartment where the picture was taken? I wouldn't be surprised if he buys and sells properties for himself, but it was a weirdly throwaway remark.

The buyer who's a friend of Ryan's brother kept changing his tune depending on whatever the Fat Jew said. You'd think someone who has $4M to spend could afford his own opinions.

I know I've seen the apartment that Ryan sold to his brother's friend someplace. As soon as they walked into it, I thought to myself, 'that wall of glass is going to cantilever up and out'. And sure enough, it did just that.

Was that apartment featured as a rental on this show? Maybe on Selling New York as a rental? It's driving me nuts (not a drive, really. More like a short putt). But I know I've seen it before.

Help a girl out, please.

Exactly, the guy appears like a dufus, seeking out that Fat Jew approval.

I wouldn't be surprised if the whole thing was a setup to get this "sensation" on the show, with prepared cracks about Ryan's hair, ass, name and the putdowns of the apartments.

The buyer could be a fake and Ryan bothers with $4 million properties?  Even Steve said he normally goes for $5 million and up.  Plus has he ever represented a buyer?

In fact, all the stars of this show depend on other brokers to bring them buyers.   They brag about having a big social media following but how many people with money for $20 million properties are selecting real estate on Instagram?

Probably more like Architectural Digest with photos from big name photographers.

I think Steve's personality is far more reserved than Fredrik's and Ryan's. I don't think a reserved personality always translates as well through TV.

I realize that I'm sounding like a Steve defender. Right now, I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt and hope we see more of his personality soon.

If I never see The Fat Jew on any Bravo show again, it'll be too soon---this is a dude who's claim to fame is stealing jokes/memes online and acting/looking like an oaf at society events, so I'll never understand why he's gradually gotten so ubiquitous. Are his endless recent Bravo appearances all Andy Cohen's fault or is this dude blowing some Bravo executive?

All I know is that Fat Jew is the classic case of an obnoxious fat kid overcompensating for his looks by desperately trying to be funny---and failing miserably. I did *love* how Ryan clearly hated him and roasted him in his talking heads---and that's one of many reasons why I still adore Ryan, fugly beard and all.

This show should have Steve petting cute Frenchies every other episode. Or at least have him slowly seducing a clearly flummoxed Fredrik. Those two are fun together!

The MDLNY producers probably thought they'd be injecting the funny by having him on.

it would be funny if they had buyers repeatedly make some substantive criticisms of properties.

of course then the show may not be allowed to film these high end properties.

Fredrik is attractive too. I follow him on social media. What I most like about him is how grateful he is for the life he has. Obviously no one's happy 24/7, but I feel like Fredrik's one of those rare birds who's pretty close to that 24/7 Happiness ideal.

His happiness rubs off on others.

Fredrik's attitude toward life is his most attractive quality.

I find all 3 guys attractive, and for different reasons.  It's not just a physical thing.  As you said Surrealist, Fredrik exudes happiness and a certain zest for life that's contagious!  I like his can-do attitude.  He doesn't take no for an answer.  I like his determination.  I really appreciate the major attitude change in Ryan from season 1.  His sense of humor in his THs is funny to me.    I think that he and Fredrik would be fun to hang out with.  I'm still figuring out who Steve is.  I like that he's got a different approach than Ryan & Fredrik, and he seems to be a genuinely nice guy.  I liked how he and Fredrik bantered back and forth over Fredrik's new listing.  I like seeing this kind of interaction rather than what we saw in season 1 between Ryan & Fredrik.  I enjoy watching some reality shows without all of the drama between the cast.

yeah, I was like, that's actually a *great* idea

Old-fashioned print ads are wicked expensive. I work with a non-profit and we won a contest for "best graphic ad" for the non-profit in a regional paper. Our prize was some cash and "$1500 worth of advertising". That equated to 2 ads in the paper. Wow! And this was most certainly not the NY Times!

I did too.  It's interesting for me, being the dinosaur that I am, to see the newer, creative ideas that these young people bring to the table.  Their knowledge and use of social media and technology in general is light years ahead of me, so I enjoy seeing some fresh ideas out there.   I thought it was a great way to get his message out.

What is with this "fat jew" guy??? He's not funny..in the least. And seriously this other guy can't buy a place without his ok? SO here's my theory.....They Hooked up on Instagram or whatever, there lovers, the fat jew is paying for this, they're too scared/stupid to get the hell out of the closet. That's the only thing that makes sense! I thought when the "jew" (God that's offensive, as is fat) wouldn't answer the phone the guy realized it was all a scam for the "celebrity"  to get in front of the cameras and now he has no home because he does not (in reality) have any money.
