S01.E11: The Snowstorm 2017.01.10

The Ottos struggle with being stuck at home without power during a
snowstorm; Katie is bitter that she can't go with the girls for the weekend.

I know this is a television and I shouldn't expect realism. Its funny when they show the Otto house it looks modest. Yet across the street her friend lives in a huge house with she said what 6 bathrooms downstairs. Would these two very different homes be in the same neighborhood let alone right across from each other.

The episode was pretty good. I liked her son and Luzs' scenes.

In Connecticut it's possible, especially in an older neighborhood where McMansions have been built next to older, smaller homes, but the much larger house would probably have a much bigger front yard or walls/trees for privacy.  You wouldn't be able to look out your front window and see all of it sticking out like that, LOL.

I enjoyed this episode but I am getting tired of them portraying Norwalk like Westport's dumpy little sister.  I lived in Norwalk for 5 years and while that perception may be somewhat realistic in Westport, Norwalk is nowhere NEAR as dumpy as they're making it sound.  Not even close.  Still, I laughed.  They got me.

Katie Mixon's voice is still annoying me.  She doesn't really talk, she aspirates and whispers.  I think she needs voice coaching, seriously.

Actually I think Mixon's delivery is the best part of the show; it's not a terribly clever or original show and some generic actress in the lead role would make the whole thing boring. I loved her reaction when Viv said "You can't stand me?" And Katy says "To be fair I was pretty clear on that." Then she surreptitiously reaches for another cashew (or whatever those nuts were). I also loved when Viv was saying "Not as big as you, of course," and "Not as small as your house, of course," and Katy interjected with "Don't feel the need to include me in your story." She has a good way with the quips - quick delivery, sarcastic tone, just the right facial expressions. It's her I'm watching for. The show itself is pretty mediocre without her.

Granted, she's a particular taste. I can see how some would find her annoying, but if you don't appreciate her unique quirkiness I don't really know what else the show has to offer.

Agreed. Katy Mixon is the show, as far as I'm concerned.

I would say yes. My dad lives in a suburb of Chicago and they built this huge house next to all these much smaller, much older homes. It looks so out of place!

I was just up there and someone bought the lot next to them and they built even a bigger house there. So now two gigantic houses in this neighborhood.

Texasmom, I see your point, but in many of the well to do and/or up & coming
neighborhoos around here (I live in Northern NJ) where there is a lot of land,
small homes are being knocked down and huge mansions and/or McMansions are
being built on these large plots. While some of the neighboring homes may still
be small. My friend lived in such a small home (which she rented) surrounded
by both huge homes like we saw Am Housewife and smaller ranch type homes.
So, for me it was believeable.  Oh I see Snarkelpuss has posted the same thing!

And yeah, I find Nixon's voice annoying too. I don't really care for her but it's
mostly her voice which kind of gives me the jeebies, it's so grating. I do like
the dad and the kids though or at least the 2 girls. And the wife's girlfriends.

Surprisingly, this ep teared me up twice. When Viv said she missed her 1st
marriage and when Kate came back and apologized to husband and kids. I
liked that whole last conversatioin with Nixon and the Viv character. I was
surprised as often this show is a bit abrasive.

IMonrey, I agree with all you comments on Nixon's acting choices. It's just
her voice that annoys me. Her delivery, etc. is great. It's not the actress that
I dislike the actress that much.

I enjoyed the interaction between the father and the older daughter.
They were both so into the camping experience. It was nice to see
them bonding.

I agree that Katy Mixon is what makes this show, her line delivery is top shelf. She reminds me of Megan Mullaly, the same snark. MM would have been great casting as her mother, although choosing someone completely opposite like they did is clever.

As for the episode, TV's ideas of snow days always makes me laugh. It snows, ergo snow day? Shouldn't there be huge mountains of snow or zero visibility? If a snow day is called whenever it snows, would there ever be school in Connecticut in the winter? (I'm going to post the same thing in the Goldbergs thread)

Do you mind Norwalk being synonymous with a diarrhea virus? Cuz that's all it means to me.

I'm like you - I like a lot of her acting and her delivery is often terrific, but her voice bugs me.  Still, I enjoy the show in general, and really liked this episode a lot.  Particularly the interaction between Katy and Viv, and the second breakfast scene.

I loved the scene where Viv was telling Katie about her first husband. That really helped humanize the character.

The ending scenes with Oliver and Luz, then Oliver with the family, were sweet, but that was such a dramatic change of heart for him; I guess I can cut him some slack since he's a kid.  I hope they make him more likeable, because he's been pretty insufferable up to now.

This made me laugh right from the start. My husband loves camping, and I used to not mind it, but I've gotten to hate it more with each passing year. It's just getting dirty and sleeping on an air mattress that will be deflated by morning. Once a year I endure a weekend in the woods, and start counting down the hours until I can come home. If I wasn't too old to have another kid, I'd seriously consider Katie's approach of getting pregnant to avoid going camping. And I thought her line of asking Viv if the blanket was made of puppy was funny.

Mostly realistic depiction of childhood OCD?

That's Norwalk, Ohio, not Norwalk, CT.
