Morning Joe All Episode Talk

Believe it or not, Cokie used to be a well respected analyst on ABC with David Brinkley. George Will was also on that show.

Sam Donaldson was also a regular panelist on that show.  In comparison of relative boorishness, Donaldson makes Joey Scar look like an amateur.  Cokie seems to be subconsciously reverting to the survival techniques she used to get her points across with Donaldson.  I can't say that I blame her.

Cokie was hilarious in 2015 when she argued that Hillary would win the election because people liked her as a Grandma.

I distinctly remember that stupid prediction by Cokie and I actually give Clinton credit for a rare showing of respect for the voters for not playing that game, and for not using her grandchildren as props.

Ten years have taken its toll on this show. If you want to know why we still watch, look no further than the easy, honest conversation of Barnicle, Kasie Hunt,  Brian Sullivan, and Bianna Golodryga at the tail end of today's show. Contrast that with Joe spewing out his agenda at the top, everybody nodding in concurrence and Mika blithely sitting pretty repeating "I'm a Democrat, I'm a Democrat" over and over again.

This show BADLY needs new blood. Joe and Mika have to go. But I'll keep watching for the nostalgia, the rare unscripted moments, and the potential for new hosting hope.

Friday Recap: With terrorist attacks in Paris on the Champ Elysees, Syria, healthcare etc, Joe decided to start ranting about a Milwaukee mayor who wanted optional ultra sounds. The Democratic elite is opposed to this & key endorsements have been withdrawn. The elite wants 100% pro choice policy. Mika called him a little Mayor & Joe exploded at her. Joe said not to call everyone under 50 little. Mika turned away from him. No fun this weekend for Little Joe.

Joe said that the Democrats will be in the minority until they accept moderate Democrats.

Everyone is upset with Trump trying to push a new healthcare plan through. It's too fast.

Kasie ! is on the set in black. She is smiling. Smiling Kasie makes me happy.

Joe is wearing a suit. Mika keeps saying Oh My Lord!. She has a royal blue dress.

Kasie said they gave Bannon healthcare. Joe started groaning. Mika said they gave Bannon a rock.

Meacham said that Southern Democrats were popular when he was growing up. He said the Democrats were popular in the 1940s with segregationists , western populists & Northeastern liberals.

Trump got a Egyptian Americans prisoners released. Joe is happy that Sisi is a ally of Trump & was able to get the prisoners released.

Mika sadly reported that Obama wasn't able to get the prisoners released for years.

Joe blamed Obama for poor relations with Egypt. Joe said that Obama was too easy going with Iran.

They finally discussed the french terrorist attack.

What was interesting about their discussion of Palin's interview with Tapper is that neither Joe nor Donny addressed the *real* interesting part of it - that Palin hemmed and hawed and was all ahumina-humina when asked if she had ever been harassed at Fox. Right over their heads. Purposefully, perhaps.

(Man if they are harassing a former VP nominee - as much as a clown as she is - can you imagine what it's like for a PA or producer?)

I thought Maxine Waters held her own very well this morning. And I'm not always a fan. She pointed out that this *was* different than McConnell promising never to work with Obama, because Obama made gesture after gesture for bipartisanship, and not only has Trump never made that gesture, his cabinet picks and his EOs indicate a hard right view that will never be open to compromise. And she mocked them all for cheering on his so-called "pivots."

I got the impression from Palin that she wasn't sexually harassed but that she hemmed and hawed to make it seem like she was.  She is beyond disgusting.

Sarah if Ted Nugent and Kid Rock are your examples of hard working middle class Americans, you're more batshit than I even believed.  The three of them discussing policy with Trump is like my dog discussing astrophysics with my cat.  Except my dog and cat would have a more intelligent conversation.

That's because she was right. She called them out on all of their self-delusional hypocrisy for treating him like he's a normal president. She kept saying, "This isn't normal - stop trying to pretend it is."

I don't understand what they keep thinking there is for anyone to "work with him" on. Work with him on what? Taking healthcare away from 24 million people? Passing a fake "infrastructure" bill that is really nothing but tax breaks for rich people? Destroying the environment? What, praytell, is there to "work" with?

And Joe can just STFU right now about "supporting moderate Democrats" who are also "pro life." I don't care how anyone feels about abortion personally, but if you are pursuing policies that make access to abortion more difficult for women, you are NOT a moderate Democrat, so what would be the point in me voting for you?

What does "elite" mean?   What an odd word it's become.  How is 100% pro choice an extreme position?  It's not.  Either a woman is free to make choices or she's not.  Would I be an extreme "elite" if I thought men ought to be 100% able to get snipped or purchase Viagra without jumping through hoops, taking medical tests, having counseling, etc...?

This confirms Joe donated to Trump inauguration.  So much for not being biased, altho we never thought he was.   He says "we'll talk about this Monday".  Yeah right.

Huff Po & Steven Rich of DataEditor has the list of donors and is trying to track down how legit they all are.  I was reading replies and came across this.

They're trying to find out if donors are getting favors from Trump Admin, because the inauguration sure didn't cost that much to put on.

Of course there was no outrage from the right, or the panel, of Sarah Palin and her band of idiots.  If President Obama's  friends, would have posed, with hand gestures, in front of Laura Bush's portrait, they would have called for his impeachment.

Call Trent Lott?  That was funny.  Why should he?  He said over and over again, "I know more than the generals, believe me".  And more about everything so why would he need Trent Lott's or anyone's help?

Wasn't Trent Lott removed from the Senate Leadership for having a birthday party for Segregationist Senator Strom Thurmond in 2001 or 2002? Trump does not need him for help.

At Strom Thurmond's birthday party, Trent Lott gave a speech saying the country would have been better off if he had won (Thurmond ran for the presidency as a segregationist in 1948 and he ran again as VP on the segregationist ticket with Harry Byrd in 1960.)  Essentially, Lott was saying that the country would be better off if civil rights had never been won for African Americans in the '60s. Sounds like Trump's kinda guy.

Another bit of Thurmond history: Six months after Thurmond's death, Essie Mae Washington-Williams publicly revealed she was his daughter. She was born on October 12, 1925, to Carrie "Tunch" Butler (1909–1948), who had worked for Thurmond's parents and was 16 years old when Thurmond, then 22, impregnated her.

Joe said the key members of the DNC elite & base will never allow a candidate to have a pro choice position.  Joe applauded the candidate for optional ultrasounds before aborting the baby. It is my understanding that the federal government will not pay for abortions, so why hasn't the DNC set up fundraising drives to  help pay for abortions? They could get celebrity endorsements from traditional Democratic supporters in Hollywood. It's dangerous for women not to have access to abortions because they can't afford it.

I have noticed that Mika was not a strong supporter of abortion. She was raised Catholic. Joe periodically goes on these anti abortion rants.

You are correct! I vaguely recall W freaking out over this. It's surprising that the Democratic party allowed Byrd to run as a Democrat Senator  in spite of his segregationist views. Obama would not have approved of his candidacy. I think Byrd admitted that Segregation was bad for African Americans.

At the time, people were defending Thurmond (and Byrd I guess) for "coming around" in their old age and admitting they were wrong. Yeah right. That's why Lott could feel so confident his comments would be appreciated. I don't believe those Dixiecrats ever changed. Back in the day, racism was more rampant in the Democratic party which pretty much ruled the South (due to their hatred of Lincoln freeing the slaves and Reconstruction). Jeff Sessions is proof the Dixiecrat mindset is alive and well in the REPUBLICAN party.  Not sure about Scarborough but he'd be quite an exception if he wasn't a racist, coming from the Florida panhandle and being a good-ole-boy Republican of a certain age.

When I get some free time , I would like to review Joe's congressional record. I would think that Joe was pretty Conservative when he ran & was elected. Joe brags that he was elected to represent the Redneck Riviera. He has also mentioned that he attended schools in the desegregated South, ( Atlanta?) . IMHO ,Joe's goal since he joined MSNBC has been to ingratiate himself with the Washington elite which is mostly Democratic. Mika is the perfect partner to help him reach his objectives.

I would expand his ambitions to include the Acela corridor of Boston (via Nantucket) through Greenwich through NY and down to D.C. He really loves playing "Republican Kennedy" what with the Red Sox fanboying and the Cape and Islands weekends. Dr Z reduced his appearances on Morning Joe after the divorce was announced. IIRC he did advise her to take part of Joe's bonus money when he offered it to her. She was grateful due to her financial difficulties at the time. Mika complained that she could not afford her wardrobe budget on her salary of $150K when the show started.

That was a powerful appearance.   She was steely and fiery all at once.

I only started watching this show in the past several weeks.   Mostly in clips on youtube.   I have never liked Scarborough much, he being part of the "Mission Accomplished" mindset during the Bush years.

What attracted my interest recently was Scarborough's seemingly realistic viewpoint regarding Trump and his administration.   For awhile there he was very critical of all the right things.   I began to think maybe his mind had become less narrow.   But as the days wore on,  I began to see articles stating that Scarborough has been taking regular phone calls from Jared Kushner.  Things started adding up.   The harsh criticism of Trump wasn't about Trump per se, but about the man behind Trump -- Steve Bannon.   In other words, Scarborough was shilling for Kushner.   And part of that was his hammering of Trump for positions that Bannon advocated, probably with a mind to turn Trump against Bannon.

My suspicions were borne out in the last week or so after the Kushner/Bannon feud came to a climax.  Bannon was removed from the National Security Council and the press started reporting that Trump had publicly put him in his place.   Almost as soon as that happened, Scarborough shifted gears.  He suddenly became upbeat about Trump (even though nothing had really changed) and repeatedly pointed out how Steve Bannon could never outwit/outlast/outplay Jared Kushner because Kushner was family.    He talks about Kushner like he's one of the cool kids at school.

It felt sort of gross when I realized what had really been going on.   It puts Scarborough in the same league as Hannity.   Not a journalist, not a pundit, not anything really but a partisan hack.

Ha!. I love the kidnapping story. Mika's dad sent  her to the South of France for the summer during her college years. Dr Z arranged for the son of the former President of Lebanon ( Gemayel?) to be her chaperon for the summer. He was a playboy & loved buying Mika skimpy swimwear. He encouraged Mika to go topless on the beaches of St Tropez. Mika didn't like posing nude. The playboy would take her to soft porn movies ( by french standards) . Mika didn't like being the girlfriend of a Playboy. Joe doesn't like her retelling this story.

Monday Recap. The panel is happy that France voted for the moderate Macron. They call him an outsider who is not racist. They obviously have no clue that he was a cabinet member in the current government of France & went to elite schools. He used to work in investment banking. He is  most well known for marrying his high school teacher who is 25 years older than him. He convinced her at age 18 to leave  her husband & 3 kids for him. They have been married for 10 years.

Joe was happy that Le Pen did not do as well as expected, but she is in the runoff.

Joe & Mika said no one talks about the Wall. Harold Ford Jr said Trump supporters want a wall. It might only be a small wall.

The mexicans won't pay for the wall yet.

Heilemam doesn't think Trump can get healthcare,Tax Reform & the budget funded in a week.

The panel was shocked that Trump supporters still support him.

Trump popularity is still strong with the base.

Comey & the emails are back in the story.. Loretta Lynch did everything she could do to protect Hillary.

Comey had to protect the FBI from Loretta Lynch. It was wrong for Bill Clinton to meet with Lynch on the tarmac.

Comey thought he could navigate for the FBI , but he was too political.

The Weiner laptops gave Comey the chance to reassert his independence. This was bad for Hillary.

Comey wasn't allowed to release information on the Trump campaign.

Joe blamed Obama for not disclosing the Russia investigation of Trump before the election. Mika is mad at the FBI.

Joe is being rude to Obama.

Joe is mocking Chris Matthews & shouting like him.

No one gets the scarves. Only Mika gets the scarves; they are a major part of her shtick. We have wondered if perhaps she signals with them. Some days she pays them an inordinate amount of attention, re-arranging and re-tying, and whatnot. They recently, finally admitted their (fairly long-term) personal relationship (after divorcing their spouses) and since then have been hitting the "dressing alike or in complementary colors" pretty hard. I wanted to punch the jerk in the 8:40ish segment who kept smugly declaring that the Dems lost state legislatures because they focus on BLM, bathroom laws, and other so-called "identity politics" rather than on economic issues. That is a false choice. The Dems can run on both. The problem is that they abandoned economic justice issues, or rather just gave them mealy-mouthed support. The DLC/DNC hard-on for "market based solutions" (which even Walsh gave lip service to in this segment) solves very little for people at the bottom tail end of the economic curve.

And Joan is not being forthcoming on her issues with Sanders. She has never liked him. She has been attacking him since he ran for president. And she and all the others clutching their pearls about his support for the Omaha mayoral candidate protest too much when they were perfectly fine with Kaine as a veep candidate - who actually SIGNED an ultrasound law as governor. She at least acknowledged her support for Kaine in the segment.

I also love the kidnapping story. After he told her to stifle he chided her by saying that he doesn't tell the same old stories again and again. (OK, his tongue was firmly in his cheek.) After that she mentioned that she recently tried again to talk to her parents about the kidnapping and they still claim not to remember it. She forgot to mention that they also don't remember losing her in New York City for awhile when she a child.
