True Detective Quotes: Time Is a Flat Circle

Ray: I welcome judgment.

Frank: Don't want to look hungry. Never do anything out of hunger. Not even eating.

Ani: [Athena]'s doing porn.

Ani's dad: Well, what exactly is porn? I remember, you see, when the status quo, they labeled anything they didn't like pornography.

Ani: Avant garde cinema then, featuring live sex acts for paying customers.

Ani's dad: She has a different outlook. Athena said it was theatre.

Ani's dad: I am not comfortable imposing my will on anyone and I haven't been since 1978.

Ani's dad: You should spend less time in a state of resistance making up problems for yourself.

Ani: What does that mean?

Ani's dad: A failed marriage, few relationships, you're angry at the entire world and men in particular, out of a false sense of entitlement for something you never received. Your entire personality is an extended criticism of my values, meant, I'm sure, to compel me into engagment through argument. Do you even like what you do? Or is it just a reflexive urge toward authority out of defiance?

Frank: You're supposed to savor that.

Ray: Let me try it again. [pours another glass]

Frank: "What, you have other options I'm not privy to?"

Ray: “Everybody’s got the one option, you want it bad enough."

Frank: "Ever since I've wondered what if he never comes home? What if I'm still in the basement in the dark? What if I died there?"

Ray: "My strong suspicion is we get the world we deserve."

From season one:

Marty: "You're like the Michael Jordan of being a son of a bitch."

Rust: "If the only thing keeping a person decent is the expectation of divine reward, then brother, that person is a piece of shit, and I’d like to get as many of the out in the open as possible."

Marty: "There's all kinds of ghettos in the world."

Rust: "It's all one ghetto man, giant gutter in outer space."

Rust: "You know, you reach a certain age, you know who you are....I know who I am. And after all these years, there's a victory in that."

Rust: "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you get good at."

Rust: "You know what you see? They welcomed it... not at first, but... right there in the last instant. It's an unmistakable relief. See, cause they were afraid, and now they saw for the very first time how easy it was to just... let go. Yeah They saw, in that last nanosecond, they saw... what they were. You, yourself, this whole big drama, it was never more than a jerry-rig of presumption and dumb will, and you could just let go. To finally know that you didn't have to hold on so tight. To realize that all your life--you know, all your love, all your hate, all your memories, all your pain--it was all the same thing. It was all the same dream, a dream that you had inside a locked room, a dream about being a person. And like a lot of dreams, there's a monster at the end of it."

Marty: "Do you know the good years when you're in them, or do you just wait for them until you get ass cancer?"

Dix: You know what? I could give a shit.

Ani: I don't think there's any confusion about that, detective.

Ani's dad: Excuse me, you have one of the largest auras I've ever seen. Green and black. It's been taking up this whole room. I just, I had to say something. You must have had hundreds of lives.

Ray: I don't think I can handle another one.

[Ani and Ray leave]

Ray: What do you think green and black means?

Ani: I don't know. You're a mood ring?

Ani: I don't know. I mean, what can I say? I just really like big dicks. Yeah, it's not just length. Everybody's always talking length. It's fine. I mean girth too. I really want to have trouble handcuffing the thing.

Ray: Pain is inexhaustible. It's only people that get exhausted.
